| the center of the light beam is always the brightest the shield is to block off anything above the central focal brightest point, i.e. the weaker lights, and to ensure that your brightest beam is aimed the furthest. by removing the glareguard and adjusting the beam lower, you've shift the weaker light to the further part of your light path so what you did gave you denser brighter light like right in front of your car, but weaker dimmer light where the light is actually needed.
